| customs | noun | The official process (and the area at a border) where goods may be inspected and taxed | We declared our purchases at customs on the way back from Finland. |
| passport control | noun phrase | The checkpoint where officials verify your travel documents | Passport control at Helsinki Airport moved quickly. |

Common Mistakes Spanish Speakers Make with Travel Vocabulary
⚠️ Watch Out: Spanish L1 Interference
Spanish uses viaje for all three, so learners often mix them up.
❌ “How was your travel to Finland?”
✅ “How was your trip to Finland?” (a specific visit)
Travel = the general concept; trip = a specific return journey; journey = the act of travelling from A to B.
Spanish speakers often translate hacer turismo word-for-word.
❌ “We made sightseeing in Oulu.”
✅ “We went sightseeing in Oulu.” / “We did some sightseeing.”
The Spanish hospedaje (lodging/accommodation) has no English equivalent with that form.
❌ “We’re looking for hospedage near the lake.”
✅ “We’re looking for accommodation / lodging near the lake.”
In Spanish, alojamientos can be plural. In English, “accommodation” is uncountable.
❌ “The island has many accommodations to choose from.”
✅ “The island has many accommodation options.” / “There are many places to stay.”
❌ “We embarked the bus to the airport.”
✅ “We boarded the bus to the airport.” / “We got on the bus.”
Embark is reserved for ships and, in formal contexts, flights.
