Ireland is known as the Emerald Isle — but beneath the lush green surface, the country is navigating one of Europe’s most complex environmental transitions. For C1 learners, this lesson unpacks the vocabulary you need to discuss climate, ecology and sustainability with real precision. These words appear in academic writing, the news, and increasingly, in everyday conversation.

Why environment and climate vocabulary matters at C1

At B1 and B2, learners talk about “the environment” and “pollution” in general terms. At C1, precision is everything. Can you explain the difference between a carbon sink and a carbon offset? Do you know when to say mitigate and when to say curb? Can you discuss biodiversity loss without sounding vague? This lesson will give you the tools.

Key principle: C1 environment vocabulary is about specificity. Instead of saying “the environment is getting worse,” you say “biodiversity is declining” or “greenhouse gas emissions are rising.” Instead of “we need to fix climate change,” you say “we need to mitigate the impacts of climate change and transition to a net-zero economy.” Specific language shows you understand the subject.

Core vocabulary: carbon and climate

The word carbon appears in many essential collocations. Learn these as whole phrases, not just isolated words:

Essential verbs

These verbs are the engine of environmental discourse. Each carries a specific shade of meaning that a C1 speaker must control:

  • Note: you mitigate impacts/risks, not climate itself

to curb

  • to reduce or control something undesirable
  • “The government introduced a carbon tax to curb emissions.”
  • Stronger than “reduce”; implies restraint

to deplete

  • to reduce a resource, often severely
  • “Decades of drainage have depleted Ireland’s peatlands.”
  • Often used with natural resources or stocks

to restore

  • to return something to its original condition
  • “Ireland is working to restore 33,000 hectares of degraded bog.”
  • Note the noun: restoration

to phase out

  • to gradually eliminate something over time
  • “Many countries are planning to phase out fossil fuels by 2030.”
  • Always used with a gradual process, not a sudden stop

to exacerbate

  • to make something worse
  • “Data centres are exacerbating Ireland’s grid carbon intensity problem.”
  • A high-register word; avoid in casual speech

At C1, you need more than just the noun. Learning word families lets you move between registers and sentence types fluently:

Notice that sequester and sequestration are almost exclusively used in academic and policy contexts. You’ll rarely hear them in casual conversation — but you will see them in IELTS writing, Cambridge C1 texts, and environmental journalism.

Ireland’s environment story: vocabulary in context

Ireland offers a striking case study for this vocabulary. A small island on the Atlantic edge of Europe, it is simultaneously a world leader in some environmental areas and falling behind in others — which makes it excellent material for nuanced discussion.

Peat bogs: ancient carbon sinks under threat

Peat bogs originally covered more than 17% of Ireland’s land area — a higher proportion than almost any other country in Europe. Ireland holds 8% of the world’s blanket bog, an extraordinary natural asset. These boglands are carbon sinks of immense importance: peatlands globally are estimated to store one third of all the carbon held in soil — twice the amount stored in the entire world’s forests combined.

Yet approximately 80% of Ireland’s peatlands are now degraded — drained, cut for fuel or planted with conifer forests over centuries of use. A degraded bog stops sequestering carbon and can even begin releasing it. Restoring these habitats is now a national priority: Ireland has committed to restoring 33,000 hectares of degraded bog, reversing centuries of depletion.

Renewable energy: rapid progress, real obstacles

By 2025, renewables provided around 40–41% of Ireland’s electricity, with onshore wind alone supplying roughly a third of national demand. Solar power grew rapidly, providing 50% more electricity in 2025 than in 2024 — a remarkable pace of transition. Ireland’s Climate Action Plan sets a binding target to generate 80% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

The decarbonisation of Ireland’s electricity grid, however, faces a structural challenge: data centres — which Ireland hosts in large numbers due to its tech industry — have consumed nearly all the new renewable capacity built since 2017. This means the grid’s carbon intensity (the amount of CO₂ produced per unit of energy) has barely improved despite enormous investment in wind and solar. Demand is exacerbating the problem of supply.

Offshore wind is seen as the solution. Ireland’s Exclusive Economic Zone — the maritime area under its jurisdiction — is approximately seven times its landmass, exposed to some of the most powerful Atlantic winds in Europe. Ireland has set a target of 5 GW of offshore wind by 2030 and 20 GW by 2040. The potential is vast; the logistical challenges of planning, grid infrastructure and port capacity remain significant hurdles.

Biodiversity: a quiet crisis

Beyond the headline figures on emissions and renewables, Ireland faces a biodiversity crisis that receives less attention. Between 2006 and 2019, researchers assessed more than 3,100 species: they found that 2.7% were regionally extinct and a further 14.7% were at risk of extinction. The curlew — a bird whose haunting call was once common across Irish farmland — is now down to approximately 150 breeding pairs.

The main driver is habitat degradation: changes in agricultural practices, drainage, pollution and invasive species are all depleting the ecosystem services that make Ireland’s countryside productive and resilient. Ecosystem services is an important C1 term — it refers to the benefits nature provides to humans for free, from clean water to flood protection to pollination.

The situation in Ireland echoes the concern voiced in advanced vocabulary lessons on strong adjectives: we don’t say biodiversity loss is “bad” — at C1, we say it is devastating, irreversible, or catastrophic.

The big picture

Ireland’s greenhouse gas emissions have fallen for four consecutive years as of 2025 — a genuine achievement. Emissions from power generation and industry fell by 5.5% in 2025 alone. Yet Ireland still has the second-highest per-capita emissions in the EU-27, at 10.4 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per person per year, compared to an EU average of 6.9 tonnes. To meet its legal 2030 target of a 51% reduction from 2018 levels, Ireland would need annual cuts of more than 10% every year from now — a pace that currently seems out of reach.

This is the tension that makes Ireland such a rich context for climate vocabulary: mitigation is happening, but not fast enough. Restoration is underway, but it’s a long process. Transition is real, but unevenly distributed. Learning to discuss these nuances is exactly what C1 level demands.

Common mistakes for Spanish speakers

Watch out for these

Contamination ≠ pollution — Spanish contaminación covers both, but English distinguishes them. Pollution is the general word for harmful substances in the environment. Contamination is more specific: it implies something pure has been made impure (contaminated water, contaminated soil samples).

Ecological ≠ environmental — Both relate to nature, but they differ. Ecological refers to the science of ecosystems and organisms. Environmental refers to the conditions and human impacts on the natural world. Many Spanish speakers use ecológico to mean “environmentally friendly,” which doesn’t translate directly.

Actualmente → currently, not “actually” — This is one of the most common false friends in the climate conversation. When Spanish speakers want to say actualmente (= right now, at present), they often write “actually” — but in English “actually” means “in reality / contrary to what you might think.”

Renewable energies (plural) → renewable energy (uncountable or singular modifier) — In Spanish, las energías renovables is naturally plural. In English, renewable energy is typically used as an uncountable noun or as a singular modifier before another noun.

“Affect” vs “affect to” — the verb is not followed by a preposition — Influenced by Spanish afectar a, learners often add “to” after “affect.” In English, “affect” takes a direct object with no preposition.
